Why Are Flu Vaccines Important?

Working at a reduced capacity while sick is a serious productivity issue for employers.

Employees who keep working with the flu – due to workplace culture, stress, or lack of sick leave – lower their own productivity and infect others around them.

One Medibank study found that presenteeism costs businesses an annual average of AU$780 per employee.*

Flu vaccination programs, on the other hand, can save businesses up to around AU$2,160 per employee annually.*

There are other considerations too.

Each year, influenza kills more than 3,000 Australians aged 50 and above – a figure that workplace vaccinations can help reduce.

Investing in a vaccine program isn’t just financially sensible.

It’s also a matter of corporate responsibility.

Flu Vaccine FAQs

The influenza vaccine is safe for the vast majority of Australians, but some people should speak to their GP before receiving a shot, including:

  • people who have had Guillain-Barré Syndrome
  • people who have had a severe allergic reaction to a previous flu vaccine
  • people who are currently unwell.

If any of your employees fall into the above groups, one of our GPs or occupational physicians can talk to them before they receive the flu vaccine.

People with severe allergies to ingredients in the recommended flu vaccine should not receive shots. (Depending on the allergy in question, a different flu vaccine may be appropriate.)

The easiest way to reduce flu incidences in your workplace is to have sick employees stay home. Many employees still attend work when sick, either because they feel obligated to or because they don’t want to use their sick leave.

Clearly communicate that anyone exhibiting flu symptoms should stay home for at least 24 hours until their symptoms have begun to clear. (If possible, give your people the option of working from home when sick.) Make sure your employees understand that this isn’t just about them – it’s also about everyone else in the workplace, particularly people who are pregnant or have compromised immune systems.

Yes, the influenza vaccine can have mild side effects, including:

  • drowsiness or tiredness
  • muscle aches
  • pain, redness or swelling at the injection site
  • occasionally an injection-site lump, which can last for several weeks
  • mild fever.

Normally, any side effects will subside after a few days.
