Pre-Employment Medical Assessments
Identify health risks in job candidates with specialised and efficient pre-employment assessments.
Trusted by leading Australian employers.
What Is A PEM Assessment?
Pre-employment medical (PEM) assessments are tests conducted by qualified healthcare professionals.
They’re used to screen job candidates for pre-existing health conditions, such as AOD use, asthma, and musculoskeletal injuries.
PEMs help you check that candidates are physically qualified for roles – and identify health risks that may need to be managed or monitored during employment.
Some industries, like coal mining, have legislated medical assessments for certain roles. We provide PEMs for a variety of requirements and completely customise the assessments to your needs.

Our PEM Assessment Process
As your end-to-end workplace health partner, we’ll help you architect a health strategy to protect your people and optimise their performance.
Strategy implementation will be directed by your dedicated customer relationship manager – one touchpoint for every health service you need.
During that process, we’ll identify any roles that require pre-employment medical assessments.
We’ll then design an appropriate multidisciplinary screening process for each role, and, following your approval, add those processes as fixed-fee options to your RediMed digital portal.
Get in touch with us to set up a complimentary consultation.
During onboarding, your customer relationship manager will show you and your team how to use the RediMed digital portal.
You can then book any of your tailored PEMs through the portal, which shows real-time in-clinic availability. (You can also contact your relationship manager to request on-site mobile testing.)
Bookings will be confirmed instantly in the portal and by email; candidates will receive email and SMS confirmation of their appointments with the assessment location, time and date.
Same-day bookings are available.
If a candidate can’t make their appointment, you can easily change or cancel their appointment time in the RediMed digital portal.
You can also re-book another candidate in their place at no extra cost.
After your candidate has undergone testing, you’ll receive the results by email and in the RediMed digital portal within 24 hours. (If they’ve been assessed at an Alliance Network clinic, results will be sent through within 72 hours.)
Each set of results is accompanied by a detailed clinical report that explains the significance of the findings and the assessing practitioner’s recommendations.
Pre-Employment Medicals FAQs
Different PEM assessments take different amounts of time. Most workplace healthcare providers deliver the results for a ‘standard’ PEM the same or next business day. Longer assessments with more complex testing requirements can take longer.
At RediMed, the results for all PEMs conducted in clinic or by our mobile testing units are usually delivered to you within 24 hours. This turnaround may be extended if we are awaiting further information however if results are not delivered within 24 hours you will be notified.
If you aren’t recruiting within our clinical service areas, results for PEMs conducted by our Alliance Network clinics will be delivered within 72 hours.
Non-specialised PEMs are requested by employers to improve employee–role fit and reduce injury risk. They’re not required under legislation, and, as such, don’t have an ‘expiry’ date. Generally, though, if you do require PEMs for certain roles, those roles should have periodic medical testing conducted at intervals recommended by your RediMed relationship manager.
Pre-employment medical assessments are designed to make sure the candidate in question can meet the role’s physical requirements and to identify injury risk factors. Identifying medically unfit candidates before hiring means time and money aren’t wasted onboarding workers who aren’t role-appropriate. That, in turn, helps improve productivity and lower liability risks.
PEMs also effectively benchmark workers’ health, which eliminates the risk of compensation claims for pre-existing conditions. (In some cases, workers may not even be aware that they have health conditions.)
Finally, some industries and roles have legislated sets of tests. Rail safety workers, for example, must undergo specific PEMs based on their rail safety work risk category. In those scenarios, PEMs can help you meet your legal obligations and avoid regulator involvement.
We have 6 RediMed clinics sited across Western Australia and Queensland that your candidates can attend for PEM assessments. We can also deploy mobile testing units to locations of your choice, such as corporate offices, field headquarters, or work sites.
If neither option is appropriate for your candidates, assessments can be conducted by members of our Alliance Network – qualified healthcare partners located in capital cities and regional centres across Australia.
